International Expert Meeting on the Implementation of UNESCO Historic Urban Landscape Recommendation was held in Tongji University from March 26 to 28.
More than 30 experts from all over the world took part in this 3-day meeting at the World Heritage Institute of Training and Research for the Asia and the Pacific Region (WHITRAP Shanghai). Debates were carried out on the global relevance of HUL as well as its current and future challenges. This meeting also addressed the preparation of guiding tools including an HUL Manual in order to fulfil the aims of The UNESCO Recommendation on the Historic Urban Landscape, UN Sustainable Development Goals as well as UN-Habitat New Urban Agenda.
Themed speeches covered various issues such as “Addressing Varied Urban Scales, from Small Settlements to Metropolis”, “Addressing Varied Urban Typologies, from Walled Cities to Modern Heritage”, “Addressing Links between Urban Setting, nature, Climate Change and Intangible Heritage” and ”Implementation of HUL”. During the meeting, international experts paid field visit to urban renewal and heritage conservation-utilization projects in Hongkou-Creek historic area. They also visited the exhibition of Planning the Historic City: 1946-2000 in Tonji University Museum.
This Expert Meeting was organized jointly by UNESCO World Heritage Centre and WHITRAP Shanghai, together with Hongkou District Government. It’s co-organized by Tongji Urban Planning and Design Institute (TJUPDI) with the support of Tonji University Museum and the Italian General Consulate in Shanghai.
