Winner of the UNESCO Asia-Pacific Heritage Awards for Culture Heritage Conservation and receiver of the Ordre des Arts et des Lettres, Professor Ruan Yisan lectured on the Crossover Rostrum on September 18, 2017. Themed “Historic Heritage of Chinese Cities”, Ruan’s Lecture covered his legendary experiences in the protection campaigns of such famous historic towns as Lijiang, Pingyao, Zhouzhuang and Wuzhen. Vivid stories about the Bund and Shanghai Ghetto as well as the Three Lanes and Seven Alleys in Fuzhou aided Ruan’s elucidation of one key value of built heritage which is linked with memories and which he calls nostalgia. Having a workstation of the Shanghai Ruan Yisan Urban Heritage Foundation in Wuhan and coming to this city almost every year for Crossover activities, Ruan is doing his best to contribute to heritage conservation of Wuhan.
